I had a tour of Thailand planned and thought this book might give me some insight on what to expect. I started reading it during the trip and just finished it now that I have been home for three months. I wanted to finish it before I wrote this review, and forced myself to do so. The book was neither informative nor particularly entertaining. It was basically the memoirs of a young man and his wife, who lived in Chang Mai, Thailand for a year and a half. It told nothing else about Thailand, not even Bangkok! He talked about his living quarters, a visit from his aunt and uncle, and his taste for American junk food. He basically interacted with other Americans in the community, and so wrote about them. He wrote very little about the native people. Maybe he thought his experience was interesting enough for a book, but I thought it was very mundane. Reading it was a waste of my time.Product details

Why Travel When You Can Live There? Thailand eBook Rick Granger Reviews
This was the type of book that kept my interest and made me wonder what was going to happen next. I found that as I approached the conclusion of the adventure I began to put it down more and more because I didn't want it to end. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to live in a far off land this would be a perfect read for you.
Reading this book is like meeting someone for the first time and listening to all their funny anecdotes about life in a strange new place. Of course, it helps if you know the author. I do, and the book is so conversational that I can hear his voice narrating it in my head. It probably won't be of any help in planning a move, but it sure will make you want to.
After living in Chiang Mai, Thailand myself, reading this book brings me back home. The imagery Granger creates is amazing! I can picture myself in the places he describes, see the streets, and smell the smells! My husband, who has only visited one island of Thailand, gets excited about living overseas at some point in our life and can't wait to visit Chiang Mai. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who loves Thailand, travel, and life overseas.
This was a fun book to read! Although they all tied together it was like a series of short stories that drew you right into the adventures the author and his wife had in Thailand! It made me laugh at my own expatriate life and gave me the urge to experience more of the differences in the world's cultures. I would recommend this book for those who want to travel(or live) not just to Thailand but anywhere in the world, or even to those who want to stay on their sofa. It is a great reminder not to take things too seriously and to be open to new ideas.
